Mondays with Mark: Canker Sores, ADHD & Sleep, Tongue-Tie, Teeth Whitening Tips

I’m writing from our barn in Napa Valley on a bright, blue-sky day. I hope many of you are enjoying time off today—whether for President’s Day, Carnevale, or a simple pause in your routine.

I have several updates to share, starting with a new podcast episode, an upcoming tongue-tie Q&A, and some evidence-based notes about sleep and dental health. Mark your calendars for Wednesday’s events. 📆

1. NEW EPISODE: What’s the difference between a canker sore and a cold sore? (Listen to the episode) 🎧
In this episode I speak with Dr. Staci Whitman, IFM-certified pediatric dentist, about the root causes of canker sores and cold sores, how to prevent them, and practical treatments when they occur. We explore connections with the oral microbiome, allergies, toothpaste ingredients, essential oils, stress and fatigue, and nutrition. We also share our top go-to remedy when an outbreak happens: salt. 🧂

2. Many cases of ADHD-like symptoms may be undiagnosed sleep apnea 🧠
If a child shows ADHD-like behaviors, struggles with sleep, or grinds their teeth at night, consider a sleep study. Obstructive sleep apnea can mimic attention-deficit disorder, so getting a proper evaluation is important. Review the study “Obstructive Sleep Apnea Mimics Attention Deficit Disorder” and discuss a sleep study with your pediatrician—be prepared to advocate for the testing if needed. My book, The 8-Hour Sleep Paradox, can help guide you through the complexities of sleep medicine and getting appropriate care.

3. Questions about tongue tie in adults? 👅
Tongue tie is often discussed in the context of infants and breastfeeding, which is critically important. However, tongue-tie release can benefit older children and adults as well. If you’re considering a release for yourself or a family member, don’t miss this week’s Instagram Q&A with Jacqueline Carcaramo, RDH—functional hygienist and Harvard Med writing scholar—who will answer questions and share her own experience with adult tongue-tie release. Submit your questions on @askthedentist this Wednesday.

4. What is the safest way to whiten your teeth? 🦷
There’s no perfectly safe way to whiten teeth, but many people (myself included) choose to do it for cosmetic reasons. Whitening is a personal decision and should be initiated by the patient, not the dentist. The EU enforces stricter standards than the US, which is worth considering. In this new blog post I outline my criteria for the safest and most effective teeth whitening approaches, focusing on minimizing risk while achieving noticeable results.

Wishing you a great week,

P.S. The water filter I use is this one. I find it an easy, affordable way to reduce a highly concerning neurotoxin from drinking water—I use mine daily.
