Welcome to this week’s edition of Mondays with Mark. Here’s what’s new this week…
1. Why Do Some of Us Get More Plaque than Others? [Episode #5] 🎙
Have you ever wondered why a partner or friend who seems less diligent about oral care gets a spotless dental report while you, despite careful brushing and flossing, struggle with plaque? It’s a frustrating and common concern.
Why do some people develop more plaque than others? This question can perplex even experienced dentists because plaque formation is influenced by multiple factors beyond basic hygiene.
In this episode I focus on people who feel they’re “doing everything right” yet don’t see the results they expect at check-ups. We explore underlying causes—genetics, saliva composition, diet, the oral microbiome, and lifestyle factors—and practical steps you can take to address them. If you’ve been confused by inconsistent dental outcomes, this episode aims to help you get to the root of the issue.
2. The Dangers of Fluoride on the Brain 🧠
Water fluoridation has long been promoted as a major public-health achievement, but recent research raises important questions about its safety—especially for vulnerable groups. I encourage both patients and clinicians to listen to this episode, particularly if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or have young children. The evidence discussed is compelling and has influenced my perspective. I hope those who support fluoridation will listen with an open mind.
3. April 26: 5 pm PT Clubhouse with Dr. Staci and Tyler Jean 🦠
Save the date: Dr. Staci @doctor_staci, Tyler @functional.foods, and I will be live on Clubhouse on April 26 for a conversation about the oral microbiome. We’ll cover practical tips, emerging science, and audience questions—an event for anyone interested in oral health beyond brushing and flossing.
Thanks for reading, and have a great week.

P.S. On the topic of prenatal dental development: most prenatal vitamins do not supply every nutrient important for maternal dental health and proper oral development in utero. This one by Ritual is the only prenatal multivitamin I’ve found that includes the range of nutrients a dentist would look for—vitamins K2, D3, and E; omega‑3s; methylated folate (which helps reduce risk of tongue tie); iodine; iron; and magnesium—making it a more complete option for patients focused on oral development during pregnancy.
