Are you thinking about dental implants but concerned about how long the process takes or how long you might be without teeth? You don’t have to worry. We provide transparent information about the full implant process—cost estimates, expected timelines, what to expect in terms of discomfort, and the stages involved. As a locally trusted, five-star rated dental implant practice, we’ve summarized the typical timeline below to give you a clear, realistic picture.
What is a typical timeline for an implant tooth replacement?
The length of implant treatment depends on your overall oral health and any preparatory work you might need. For some patients the process can be completed in about 4–6 months; for others it may take 12 months or longer. The following step-by-step timeline outlines the common stages involved:
1. Initial consultation – 1 day
The first visit determines whether you’re a suitable candidate for dental implants. During a complimentary comprehensive implant exam and diagnostic x-rays, our doctor evaluates your oral health and reviews the recommended treatment plan. If implants are appropriate, we’ll schedule the placement appointment and guide you on the next steps.
Pre-treatment surgeries – 3–12 months (if needed)
Some patients require preparatory procedures before implant placement. These may include bone grafting to restore missing bone, tooth extractions to clear the site, or alveoloplasty (smoothing the jawbone) to prepare the area. Healing from these procedures can take several months—commonly 3–6 months, and in some cases longer—before implants can be placed. If no pre-treatment surgery is required, you’ll move directly into implant placement.
2. Implant placement – 1–2 weeks
If no pre-treatment is needed, the implant is typically placed about 1–2 weeks after the consultation. During the procedure the implant fixture is inserted into the jawbone where the missing tooth root once was. The surgical site is cleaned and sutured to support healing, and you’ll go home with post-operative care instructions.

3. Healing and recovery – 3–6 months or longer
Initial soft-tissue healing typically takes 1–2 weeks, but the implant must also osseointegrate—bonding to the jawbone—to become a stable, long-lasting part of your mouth. Osseointegration commonly takes 3–6 months, though some cases need more time depending on bone quality and individual healing factors.
4. Building your implant restoration
During healing you’ll return for follow-up visits. When the implant site is ready, an abutment is placed to connect the implant to the final restoration. The gums are managed to allow proper healing around the abutment, and impressions and images are taken. These records are sent to a dental laboratory that fabricates your crown, bridge, or other prosthetic to match your bite and appearance.
5. Placing the final implant restoration – 1 day
Approximately four weeks after the abutment placement—once soft tissues are stable—you’ll return for the final appointment. The clinician checks the fit of the permanent restoration and then secures it by screw or cement, completing the process and restoring function and esthetics.
