Have you been curious about oil pulling but put off by the mess? Whether you’re already an oil-pulling enthusiast or want to start, these microbiome coconut oil pulling chews are an easy, convenient, and effective way to incorporate the practice into your routine.
Oil pulling comes from Ayurveda, the traditional healing system of India, which uses diet, herbs, and simple daily practices to support whole-body balance. Long before modern toothpastes and mouthwashes, oil pulling was used to support oral health. In Ayurveda it was understood that the mouth reflects overall body health — a principle still relevant today.
Oil pulling — the practice of swishing oil in the mouth — can help clean the mouth, reduce bad breath, and brighten teeth. These pre-portioned chews make oil pulling tidy and practical for daily use.
Each ingredient in this recipe was chosen to support the oral microbiome, encourage tooth remineralization, and strengthen the protective biofilm around teeth. The result can be fewer cavities, fresher breath, and better digestive health.
Coconut oil
Coconut oil contains lauric acid, a natural antimicrobial. Laboratory studies show lauric acid can inhibit Streptococcus mutans, a key bacteria involved in tooth decay.
Avocado oil
Avocado oil is rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats like oleic acid and contains antioxidants and vitamin E. These components help reduce inflammation that, when chronic, can contribute to gum disease.
Baobab
Baobab powder is a fiber-rich prebiotic that nourishes beneficial microbes in the mouth. It is high in vitamin C, which supports gum health, and contains bioflavonoids. Its subtle citrus sweetness works well as a natural flavor and mild sweetener.
Spore-based probiotic (optional)
Spore-based probiotics are derived from soil strains similar to microorganisms early humans commonly encountered in whole foods. They are more resilient than many other probiotic strains and can tolerate wider variations in pH and temperature, making them a practical option for oral applications.
Below is the recipe and step-by-step instructions for making these chews at home.
Microbiome Coconut Oil Pulling Chews
3 from 1 review
Even if you already take an oral or systemic probiotic, adding a spore-based probiotic to these chews can be helpful. Swished in the mouth for several minutes, the spores have time to act locally against harmful bacteria and help rebalance the oral microbiome — an important factor in controlling bad breath and preventing gum disease and cavities.

- Prep Time: 10 minutes
- Cook Time: 5 minutes
- Total Time: 15 minutes
- Yield: Makes about ¾ cups or 36 one teaspoon portions
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup Cold-pressed organic coconut oil (unrefined, gently warmed to liquefy if needed)
- 1/4 cup Avocado oil
- 3 teaspoons Baobab powder
- 2 crushed spore-based probiotic capsules (optional)
- Mini ice tray (silicone or BPA-free recommended)
- Glass jar for storage
Instructions
- Combine the coconut oil and avocado oil in a small bowl until well mixed.

- Whisk in the baobab powder and the contents of the probiotic capsules, if using, until the powder is evenly incorporated.

- Spoon the mixture into a mini ice tray in 1 teaspoon portions (or 2 teaspoons if you prefer larger chews). Smooth the tops so portions are even.

- Freeze for at least 2 hours, or until the chews are completely hardened.
- Pop the chews out of the tray, transfer them to a glass jar, and store in the refrigerator. Use one chew each morning for oil pulling before eating or drinking. Look for silicone or BPA-free trays where possible.

Notes
After brushing and flossing, place one chew in your mouth. It will begin to melt; gently swish, pull, and suck the oil through and around your teeth. Start slowly — work for about 1–3 minutes per session if you are new to oil pulling, and gradually increase time as comfortable.
Avoid swallowing the oil. If swallowing feels difficult, cut a chew in half to use a smaller portion.
Dispose of used oil in the trash rather than the sink or toilet to avoid plumbing issues. Rinse your mouth with warm water after oil pulling.
