Make-Your-Own pH-Balancing Mouth Rinse for Fresher Breath

Let’s face it: some of the most popular and enjoyable beverages can also be hard on your teeth.

If your day includes morning coffee, a glass of red wine at night, and kombucha or tea in between, you expose your enamel repeatedly to acidic drinks. Over time, that acid erodes enamel, increasing the risk of decay. Acidic conditions also encourage the growth of bacteria that contribute to bad breath, gingivitis, and cavities.

Rather than avoid these drinks entirely, a practical approach is to neutralize the acid they introduce. Healthy saliva sits near pH 7.1, slightly acidic to start digestion, while blood is around pH 7.4. When acidic foods or beverages push oral pH lower, they create an environment that harms enamel and supports pathogenic bacteria.

Rinsing with plain water after acidic drinks helps, but this DIY rinse is an improved option. It neutralizes acid and helps rebalance oral pH toward a more alkaline level that supports a healthy oral microbiome.

The key ingredients are blue-green algae, a natural alkalizer that also helps moisturize the mouth, and baking soda, a well-known acid neutralizer. This simple mouth rinse is easy to prepare and keeps on hand for quick use after acidic foods and drinks.

While it’s unrealistic to cut all acidic foods and drinks from your routine, this rinse—approaching pH 9.0—reduces their impact. A quick rinse protects tooth enamel and supports a balanced oral microbiome.
