Dentist-Approved Teething Popsicles to Soothe Baby Gums

If you’re a parent of a young child, you know teething can be an uncomfortable and stressful phase. Many over-the-counter remedies promise relief, but few support long-term oral health.

For example, the FDA has warned against benzocaine teething gels because they can cause methemoglobinemia, a rare but serious condition that reduces the amount of oxygen carried in the blood.

As a result, many parents look for simple, natural options that are safe and effective. These Gum-Soothing Popsicles offer a gentle, homemade approach built from ingredients known for their anti-inflammatory properties and minimal added sugar.

The main ingredient in this recipe is turmeric, a natural anti-inflammatory shown to help soothe inflamed tissues. We pair turmeric with a touch of ginger and optional cinnamon, both of which add mild anti-inflammatory benefits and a pleasant flavor profile suitable for babies when used sparingly.

These popsicles are easy to prepare: simply blend the ingredients and pour into molds. If you don’t have popsicle molds, freeze banana slices, then blend the frozen bananas with the other ingredients (omitting the coconut water) for a creamy, ice-cream–like treat.

Be aware that turmeric can stain fabrics and surfaces as the popsicles melt, so have a towel handy. Also note that many pediatricians recommend waiting until a baby is at least 4–6 months old before introducing solids; some advise waiting longer depending on individual development. Always follow your pediatrician’s guidance when introducing new foods.

Turmeric can stain, but these popsicles are a wholesome option to soothe sore gums. With only the natural sugars from bananas and no added sweeteners, they provide a nutritious, low-sugar treat for older infants and toddlers.
