Does Wisdom Tooth Extraction Cause Your Face to Look Thinner?

Q

I had my wisdom teeth removed six months ago at the age of 21. My appearance seems to have changed. My jaw seems narrower and seems to sit a little higher on my face. Is this possible.

A

Many people, including myself, notice subtle changes in facial appearance after wisdom teeth removal. These changes can include a slightly narrower jawline or a subtly different position of the lower face. While the degree of change varies between individuals, it is a recognized outcome following extraction for some patients.

When I discuss wisdom tooth removal with patients, I include this possibility as part of informed consent. Informed consent means a healthcare professional should explain what to expect before a procedure so patients can make a fully informed decision.

During preoperative discussions we cover the common medical risks such as infection, nerve injury, or fracture. It’s also important to mention potential cosmetic changes. For many people, the change is considered an improvement—jaw contours and cheek definition can appear more pronounced after extraction.

If cosmetic outcome is a concern, there are a few points to consider. A bone graft can be placed at the time of extraction in certain cases to preserve ridge shape, but once healing is complete and you remain unhappy with your appearance, surgical cosmetic options are the only way to reverse or alter the change.

Some patients notice that their jawline and facial structure appear more defined after wisdom teeth are removed.

In some professions, such as modeling, individuals may choose to remove wisdom teeth for aesthetic reasons. I do not recommend extracting healthy teeth solely for cosmetic purposes; extractions should primarily be performed for sound dental or medical indications.
