What’s on My Nightstand: Books, Essentials, and Night Rituals

There’s an oral-care product that has earned a permanent spot on my nightstand — and after 45 years of marriage and a drawer full of gadgets my wife has patiently tolerated, that says a lot.

It isn’t a toothpaste, floss, or a tongue scraper.

Three sprays before I turn out the lights.

A spray after a carbohydrate-heavy dinner when I can’t brush for another hour.

Half a glass of water and three sprays when a 3 p.m. hunger pang hits; the craving usually settles.

This is a throat spray formulated around two microbiome-friendly ingredients I trust: propolis and green tea.

Why I prefer this spray over traditional breath fresheners

Think of your mouth as a garden rather than a battleground. More than 700 bacterial species live there, and most of them play helpful roles in maintaining oral and overall health.

Conventional mouthwashes tend to indiscriminately wipe out that whole garden to remove a few problem microbes. This throat spray supports the oral ecosystem instead of destroying it.

Green tea polyphenols encourage beneficial bacteria while inhibiting species associated with cavities and gum disease. Recent research highlights their effectiveness against bacteria that contribute to periodontal issues.

Propolis is impressive, too. In a randomized 2024 trial, propolis outperformed chlorhexidine—the common antiseptic in medicated rinses—reducing plaque and gum inflammation over three weeks. It did so without the staining, unpleasant aftertaste, or collateral damage to helpful oral microbes.

How I use it

  • Before bed, because saliva production drops overnight and dry mouth increases the risk of cavities.
  • After pizza night with the grandkids, since high-carb meals leave the mouth acidic for about an hour; the spray helps the mouth recover.
  • When a mid-afternoon hunger pang hits, taken with half a glass of water to curb the urge.
  • On travel days, long flights or in the car—anywhere a toothbrush isn’t available.

One small tip: wait about thirty minutes before eating or drinking after you spray. That pause gives beneficial microbes time to establish themselves and do their work.

A single bottle lasts me about two months.

We all enjoy small luxuries: a well-made garment, a favorite cosmetic, a little everyday indulgence. For me, this spray is a simple oral-health luxury that adds a pleasant, practical boost to daily care.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mark
